Malcolm Wright Joint Exhibit

February 12 - March 12

Retrospective - Michael Boylen and Malcolm Wright

Malcolm “Orv” Wright ‘62 founded Marlboro College’s pottery program in 1970 and passed the reins to Michael Boylen ten years later. The two have collaborated on a joint exhibit, in part to honor Boylen, who is retiring from teaching after 30 years. Wright will display fired clay stoneware sculpture using extruded clay forms. His work combines an interest in Western minimalism with the restraint and functionality of Japan, where he apprenticed with 12th-generation  potter, Tarouemon Nakazato for two years following receiving his MFA from George Washington University. Boylen will present new and previously-displayed stoneware plates and tiles that relate to landscapes or abstractions from landscapes. His work is part of public collections in numerous museums across the United States and Europe, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum, University of Vermont, the Corning Museum of Art and Glass and the Glas Museum in Ebeltoft, Denmark.

The Drury Gallery was designed by architectural sculptor Michael Singer while he was Marlboro’s visiting artist. Installations by Marlboro students and faculty and a wide range of national and international artists fill the Drury each year. It also serves as a visually compelling space for lectures and literary readings.
